The Vallum (a defensive wall or rampart) at the N.E. corner of the Roman camp at Little Sodbury. This camp was a military base under Ostorius Scapula in A.D. 51. The outer mounds and trenches once formed part of a much older and larger British Tribal Camp during the Iron Age and is situated on top of the Cotswold escarpment with fine views across Wales and the Severn Valley and Bristol. Yate has some beautiful countryside in and immediately around it. The hamlets and villages of Mayshill, Nibley, Engine Common, Rangeworthy, Yate Rocks, Wickwar, Horton, Hawkesbury, Badminton, Acton Turville, Tormarton, Dodington, Codrington, Westerleigh and Wapley, Coalpit Heath and Frampton Cotterell surround Yate and the Sodburys and Old Sodbury itself sits on the escarpment of the world renowned Cotswold Hills.
